Mar 10, 2020 - Haydn's Scottish Songs

Mar 10, 2020 14:30:00 - St Laurence Church, ForresWhat links Robert Burns, Joseph Haydn, the Scots Musical Museum and Forres!

It is well known that Beethoven made settings for Scottish traditional songs under commission from George Thomson, an Edinburgh publisher and folk-song collector. What is less well known is that Thomson also commissioned settings from other continental composers such as Haydn, Weber, Hummel and Pleyel. Haydn commissioned Thomson to set over 200 melodies at a fee of 2 ducats apiece! About 15 years ago Glasgow University set up a project to create a sound archive of this material by sending the outstanding Scottish singers, Lorna Anderson and Jamie MacDougall, to Vienna to record them accompanied by an Austrian piano trio. The aim of the meeting is to listen to some of these songs in the splendid setting of St. Laurence Church.

Jun 15, 2018 - Women in the Mountains

Jun 15, 2018 19:00:00 - Falconer Museum ForresSimone Kenyon, dancer and choreographer hosts an evening focused on Nan Shepherd, Scottish hill walker, writer and poet and featured on the Royal Bank of Scotland’s £5 note.

Simone current artistic research is inspired by Shepherds idea of ‘Walking out of the body and into the Mountain’. She will be joined by academics and historians to discuss Shepherd’s close relationship with the hills and nature, as well as exploring women’s views, thoughts and relationship of the Scottish landscape.

Simone’s ambitious new work, Into the Mountain, is set within the Cairngorm Mountains and inspired by the lyrical and embodied prose of Nan Shepherd’s 1974 book, The Living Mountain. The site-sensitive performance explores and celebrates women’s relationships with high and wild places. Over the past four years, Simone Kenyon has worked with women who live and walk in the Cairngorms.

The evening will look at Nan Shepherd’s influence on today’s walkers, artists, writers and the North East of Scotland’s Culture.
